Hi all,
I’m looking at doing up my EJ.
I’ve had him now for 16 years and only drove it for about 5.
The last five he has been sitting a garage up in country Victoria, coz a mate of mine and I were going to do it up, but never got around to it. Now his dad wants it out of the garage, so I’m bringing him home to Melbourne.

From what I’m told some rust has come through to be expected. Back in 1996 I stripped it down to bare metal and cut out all the rust and welded new metal in. But now the cancer is back.

When he was running well in the mid 90’s he was an absolute weapon! The engine was (although in pieces now) a 186 bored to a 192 with a steel crank, star fire rods, straight cut timing gears, crow cam (35626 high lift 30/72 short duration), solid lifters, duralite pistons, 161 head ported and polished (much better than the yella terra red heads), yella terra roller rockers, and was running a 465 Holly. Also it had a Celica 5 speed.

Only ever lost one drag, and that was for three reasons, 1, was that the guy who beat me had an RX 4 13B twin turbo (bloody thing had flames coming out the back), mind you he had spent $11500 just on the engine. 2, I needed a tune, bloody points system Mallory distributor. And 3, I had 2 mates in the car extra 200kg.

Now, I’m looking at doing a few things other than fixing the body, which I consider easy.

1. I’d like to put in rack and pinion steering, as I hate the steering set up it has, i.e. draglink and the old steering box with ½ a turn play in it (I’m serious!!).
2. I’d like to put a stroker in it. 186 out to 235. I have spoken with pro stroke, and it will be over $3000 just for them to do a basic short motor.
3. I’d like to put EFI or triple carbies on it.

Now my questions are to the gurus or guys with the experience;
What do you think about the rack and pinion steering idea?? Is it worth the money around $1000)?

Is it worth stroking the motor I’ve got?? And how much HP gain (roughly) will I get from it if I run all the same stuff and just stroke it?

How much difference is there between the EFI and triple carbs? What is the difference between the Webbers, Stromberg’s and Su’s? Also, if I was to get the triples what size would I be looking at?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Cheers!

Firstly, I'm not experienced in racks into early Holdens, but it'll be better than what you have.

Forget building a 253, here's one ready to go:

Thanks for the reply Byron, but I think that motor on ebay might be a little expensive. It is not a complete short motor and would need other parts, lifters, rods, sump, balancer, push rods etc...

One of the questions was answered and this is what the

Its definitely not a 208, as a 208 isnt really a stroker. Its a 202 @ +0.060" bore. Basically the same principle in that a 350 isnt a 327 stroker. Its a factory combination. As the Auction states its got a 221 itll be a 235 stroker. I think its cheap, as

Hey Byron or anyone for that matter,
What is the difference between the different triple carbies in terms of performance? Are webers any better than su’s or what would be the difference between the su’s and EFI? While I’m at it how much better (if any

You can put triple dual chokes on a 9-port, but it wont work properly, or as well as they do with one valve per choke. You are better off in that case with the same setup as an XU-1 ie 1.75" Stombergs. As for EFI, well that would be silly as Holden alread

Byron

Do you have any information on Brian Muirs S4? I saw that car race many times while working at Katoomba and Bathurst in my younger days. It was the best EH going around in its day and had triple Webers on its 179 engine while most of the others

There are people out there with more Holden knowledge than me, and they have written valuable and informative books: Dr Terry, Warren Turnbull, Ben Stewart to name 3. My contribution is the more obscure stuff like Sandmans and Overlanders, and this stuff
