Hey Guys need some info on a set of wheels that i bought many years ago that came with a hk gts shell. The chap i bought the car from was the son of the orig owner and stated that he bought the car in brisbane and these wheels where put on by the dealer. The name on the wheels is 14"x6" COSMIC SUPA NOVA and these wheels are very very light made from magnesium alloy . They seem to have a date in them of 2/69 and a big A next to that, Has ony one ever heard of these before and they look vey similar to the xu1 sprintmasters .I'd like to use them if they where a dealer option so any info or help would be appreciated.

They were never a factory option, but dealers did fit wheels to cars, and still do. If you went in to buy a new VE and said to the sales man that you did not like the wheels, but liked a particular set at "Harries wheels". The dealer would be mad not to h

Thanks Warren and when you say they were removed for road use in the 70's , does that mean they were defective and having them checked before i use them, do you mean if they are legal or crack testing and such?

They removed MAG wheels as magnesium is highly volatile when it catches on fire you cannot easily put it out.
They are also easily damaged so they maynot hold pressure.

We used magnesium wicks in the portable soldering irons whe I was on the railways, and to light thermit welds.

I remember a similar process used on the 330 tonne Steelmaking crane runways at Newcastle Steelworks.

I work in the aviation industry and the vast majority of aircraft wheels are still magnesium alloys.
I find that interesting as aircraft brakes generate a hell of a lot more heat than car brakes and the risk is probably a lot higher yet they are still

If you have seen the "throw the VW 1/2 magnesium engine cases" into a 205lt drum of burning firewood and left till hot,then throw a bucket of water into the drum.....run like hell as the reaction shoots up metres into the air spraying molten magnesium and
