Much cheaper to replace the block with a 308 block and crank....Just checking you've got all the facts in front of you first.

if its for street use dont make it to racey or it will give you greif in heavy traffic, try a half race cam ,4bbl quad and extractors with electronic dizzy.

Since I have a 253...I would add the warm cam and the dizzy. Keep the WW Strommie - rejet it for more fuel.

I love givin it to XR6/XR8 owners when they see my tired old HQ Prem beside em at a set of lights. Just plant the foot and you get about a 50 m

I would seriously look at getting a blue 253, better crank, rods, manifold and heads than red motor - best combo to date I've done with one of these is as follows:

Balanced bottom end with forged TRW pistons narowwed chev 350 X rods with offset ground

Dome top pistons to increase the compression will also help.

You only have to be in front at the end of the race.

VN heads are a pretty expensive deal. New intake, extractors etc, plus high rpm HP.
For a mild 253, try a pre pollution holden manifold with about 600 cfm holley Squarebore. Use vac sec for auto or dp for manual with low gears.
Use a cam around 220 degr
