G'day crew, I pulled up the carpet on my HZ ute and discovered that it's actually more rust than steel. I'm not exagerating, it really is about 85% rust. The only thing stopping my foot from going through is the thick rubber mat that's been sitting under the carpet.

It goes back to a few inches in front of the drivers seat. So the question is, how do I go about repairing it? Is my best bet to buy a replacement section (seen a couple on ebay) and get someone to weld that in? Or can I just get someone to weld in a steel plate? Will I need to remove the crossmember and anything else in the way or is it easier to pull the seat out and do it from the inside?

What's it likely to cost me if I roll up to a panelbeaters and say "fix this please"?

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers

and when you're done either fix your leaks perfectly or get rid of those rubber mats, all rubber mats are good for is hiding the water and holding it down against the steel (my opinion).

That doesn't sound too bad. I have a mate with a welder. What sort of time frame are we looking at to get it done? What sort of problems could come up that are gonna slow me down or bugger me up altogether?

Cheers

Before you start, lay on your back and look up under the dash with a torch. Take a good look at the plenums on each side around where the white drain tubes start. Also look at the firewall where it joins the plenum. my guess is it will be rusted to bugger

Byron, I don't think I even want to know about the rest of the rust (I have an idea, it's real bad). I wish I could do what your suggesting, but looks like more dollars are involved than I can afford.

I just need to get it through rego for another year

Think yourself lucky it's not a 30 year old Ford or it would already have been charged into a BOS furnace somewhere.
Where are you?

Northern beaches of Sydney. I'd gladly take it to someone if they wanted some cash work but it went out of rego last week.

Are you interested in a semi-completed HX 1-tonner? Rust repaired cab, painted, all front end fixed, no cracks in chassis, RTS chassis (late HX). Factory 253 4spd but no longer has any running gear. Cab has factory A/C in it. Has HZ Premier front on it. B

Byron, if I had the room and tools to take it and put my running gear in I probably would, but unfortunately I can't do it. Thanks anyway though. I have a mate who might be interested though so I'll talk to him.

Cheers
