Hi
got the grey motor (FC) out of my old holden today together with the attached red gear box. Took them apart bu undoing the bell housing from the engine.
Planning to attached red gear box to good condition grey motor I have from an EJ.
I noticed the FC has a crankshaft clutch pilot bearing assembly (ie where the gearbox input shaft end goes through the flywheel and into the crankshaft)
However when I look through the flywheel on the EJ it does not have a bearing assmebly just a clean hole at the crankshat for the end of the gearbox input shaft.
The red gearbox seems to fit quite well to the EJ motor even though there is no bearing for the end of the input shaft. It looks like its not made to have a bearing?
Is this normal ?
does it matter if there is no bearing (ie did the models change)
any advice appreciated

Hi Jeff,
I don't specifically know about the Greys, but Red motors have a bronze bush in the back of the crank to support the front of the gearbox input shaft.
If this bush is not fitted, all sorts of dramas unfold.

There is supposed to be a bronze bush in it and don't even think about driving without it. I have seen some late model front wheel drive manual cars without bearings but things were different back in the days of your car. I would say your EJ eng

The usual thing with clutches is to put your own marks on the clutch and flywheel and line them up again when you refit the clutch. Of course that only works when you are reusing the old pressure plate.

You are talking about two different things here. The clutch consists of two pieces: one is the pressure plate i.e the big heavy piece that bolts to the flywheel and the other is the thin disc with the splined hole in the middle. It is called th

Brian many thanks all makes sense now and Ive got the clutch back on and the gearbox attached to the engine. really appreciate your advice Jeff
