Can you use a points coil on elec dizzy?

Howdy,
that's just the question that the guys at Repco couldn't answer. Can you use the same coil you had for your points when installing an electric dizzy? This one's on a stocko 186. Ta!

No...you need an HEI coil and you need to feed it with a full 12 volts rather than the 9 volts that is fed to the points coil via the resistor wire from your ignition.

So how do I wire it up? Does that mean I need to run a 12v line from the battery to a relay fired from the 9v line, & then to the coil?

Thats one way..and thats the way I do it in my car...the other is to solder on a new wire from the back of the ignition switch.

Hi Guys.
Another simpler method I've been using lately is to just bridge the IGN1 & IGN2 terminal at the ignition switch,
Beige, if you can tell me what model series you have, I can give you more exact info.

Hya Dr Terry,
The motor is in my HG ute. Thought I'd do the conversion as I think there's a problem with the points dizzy, like maybe the weight springs are slack etc because it still pings even though the timing is so far retarded that it hardly idles.

Hi Beige.
In the HK/T/G series all you need to do is remove the ignition lock barrel & undo its mounting nut. This gives you easy access to the wiring at the rear of the switch. Just bridge (join together using a small piece of wire) the IGN1 & IGN2 te |

i'm in the same position (HT GTS 350 with HEI) and was looking at IGN2. Obviously when the ignition is in the on position IGN2 has no power (12 volts) so i cant simply terminate my HEI wire here. With your method do i still terminate mt HEI w

Hi tanart.
I'm a little confused with your explanation, IGN2 should not 'blank' on any HK/T/G. By blank do you mean the terminal pin is missing or that the yellow wire is not in that cavity, where it should be.

sorry i was meaning the cavity next to IGN2 which is spare on the GTS (as per manual). I'll jumper IGN2 as recommended. This is a neater solution.

Thanks Dr Terry (& everyone else) can't tell yuo how helpful this forum is. I may not contribute much in the way of answers but that's only 'cause most times I don't have them!!! Thanks again. I'll let you know how it goes once it arrives & is installed.

Hi,
The other thing to keep in mind that I don't think has been said in this thread yet, is that the HEI dizzy you're getting off ebay will more than likely still be setup for a Blue or Black engine, so the advance curve won't be optimum. It'll work,

SO are HEI Dixxy's & Electronic the same? I thought HEI's were the ones with built in coils (on black motors...?) this one is ye olde electronic bosh with a separate coil & the internal star type mechanism thingy.

The term HEI simply means High Energy Ignition, which most modern electronic ignition systems are. The Delco HEI used in Chevys since the mid-70s have their coil mounted in the dissy cap, but AFAIK all Bosch/Holden HEI systems (6 or V8) have |

Look around for Procomp stuff. They sell new Chevy HEI dizzys modified to suit Holdens. The V8 ones are only about $100 on Ebay with cap and coil. This may be what has confused you.

I was a bit confused because the I got an 'HEI' dizzy for the 308 & it has the coil in the cap. It's a zenith, I believe. Could never get it to run in the car even with a straight 12v, but auto electrician couldn't find anything wrong with it & even had i

Whoo hoo! Dizzy has arrived. Going to put in in tonight I realised I have more wires than I know what to do with. I've got dizzy to coil (green) & then a pink wire also from the dizzy & a black wire from the terminal where the green wire is attached. Can

Hey,
Green goes to Coil -ve terminal.
Black goes to tacho, if you need it. (Most early holdens have their own wire that goes directly onto the coil for this, so just insulate this excess wire and leave it alone.)
Pink goes to Coil +ve terminal.

Ok, Dizzy has arrived & is in! Just need help with a slight teething problem...
I put the dizzy in & ran it off the yellow 9v line that goes to the points coil, just to make sure everything worked. Fired up nicely & already a noticeable improvement! Ne
