Hi,
Came home from a short drive tonight, happened to check the front brake drums when I got home, and realised they were very hot. Finally got the drums off (how long it took is another story), and decided that the shoes were set too tight. And thinking back, the brakes used to come on in the first inch of brake pedal travel.
So, I wound back the adjusting thread 3 or 4 turns (possibly too much). My HQ workshop manual simply says that the initial setting here simply means less braking while in reverse to fine-tune the adjustment.
My question is... how far/how often do you have to brake while in reverse to affect adjustment?
The pedal is now much, much, lower... I still have good brakes, but must now press much further for them. A quick drive with some short bursts of reverse braking doesn't seem to have affected that. I can lock up on bitumen (being sensible about it), but it sounds like a rear wheel that's locking.
Second question... is it short hard braking, or gradual slow braking while going backwards that pulls the adjustment in?

It's a loooong time since I had to do this Jason...My memory is it needs fairly hard braking in reverse and I seem to recall feeling the pedal push up against my foot while doing this.

Thanks Dave. After a short run last night doing reverse braking of different pressures, I never had the brake pedal push back against me. So... I'm guessing either the brakes are too loose for the auto-adjust to work, or the auto-adjust needs some lube

Back in the sixties and early seventies when I was working on new Holdens, every mechanic in the workshop adjusted drum brakes manually. I can't remember anyone ever trying to do it with the auto adjusters. I found many cars with the adjusters

Yes, the brake drums were very hot. I've made a habit of checking the disc/drum temp on the Torana (which I've had for a long time), and I've never felt them as hot as the drum

Jason from memory the trick was to put the steering on full lock and if it is faceing the right way it gives you a little more access. I cannot remember if it is left to do the left or right to do the left etc.

if the front adjust like the rears, buy a cheap small flat screwdriver, and put a 45 deg bend in it 25.4 mm from the end. its a good too to adjust teh drums.
as for the reverse bit...i found my rear drums were grabbing on slow turns. 4 reverses with br

Another thing..if the HQ hasnt had a lot of work...the rears can freeze in their cylinders..mine did.
The HQ fronts (discs) are great but the rears are lazy. AMke sure they ARE ACTUALLY working.

hq ss is probably right about turning the wheel from lock to lock but it is so long since I have looked at HQ drums I can't remember. I have manually adjusted many drums with auto adjusters on many different makes and some are much easier than
