I have a V8 HG with big brake booster and big nut master cylinder. I bought the car as a recent restoration so do not know who has done what but I know it has very poor brakes. The pedal feels spongy as if the brakes need bleeding, and then seems to bottom out half way to the floor. I bled the brakes this morning (from the wheel cylinder/caliper bleeders only) and got no air out, and if anything made the brakes worse. I have no fluid leaks anywhere, the rear wheel cylinders and shoes have been replaced, the calipers look like they have been kitted, the front brake hoses and pads have been replaced. Another symptom is when I kill the engine with my foot on the brake pedal the pedal pushes back at me hard, (this sounds like air in the system to me). Do I need to crack the brake lines up at the master cylinder to see if there is any air up there? Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

If the booster pushes back at you the booster has a faulty internal valve and needs overhauling

However a low pedal feel usually means a hydraulic problem

But if youve checked everything for leaks I'd start at the booster

A thing to check is that the calipers are on there right sides so that the bleeders are at the top not the bottom.

The problem with the pedal pushing your foot back when you switch the engine off is the result of a faulty check valve between the booster and the engine. You will see the valve easily if you follow the rubber vacuum hose back from the engine to the boos

Thanks blokes, all good stuff. The master cylinder is leaking through the back seal, and the booster must have a leaking diaphram as the non-return valve is OK.
