Hi all

I was told at my last N.S.W rego check that my HQ has play in the steering idler and that this will need replacing soon. I a not sure if it is the idler arm or the idler arm support or both that usually wears. Can anyone tell me which one you normally need to replace?

Hi Doug.

The NSW RTA maximum allowable spec is 8mm play it the extreme end. This is a lot of movement, most cars will pass under this rule. Many inspectors do not know this.

As you've mentioned it's not the idler arm that needs replacing, it has no

Thanks for that Dr Terry

My car has a tendancy to 'clunk' when tuning the steering to full lock, and the only worn area would appear to be the idler. I did but one from a reputable source that did indeed have more play than I started with.
