A mate of mine is contemplating buying a HK GTS Monaro. The problem is we suspect that it is not original. The VIN plate on the car sais H5 which indicates it is a sydney car. Now the number stamped on the firewall end in an M... which means melbourne car. Is this possible? or has it been tampered with? Can monaros be built in one state and assembled in another?

please help

cheers

I highly doubt that this car is original and would recomend a full inspection before buying. This of course is only relevent if you are gong to estore to original.

Not in HK. Its had a tag swap. Sydney HKs have a chassis number ending in SS.

Thats what i was thinking. I have been told by a couple people that if tags have been swapped on HKs there is no link between the body number and id plates to show this. So is this one of the ways to tell if they have been swapped?

the fact that they are two different states would be a dead give away.If your mate bought it and resold it he will be up against the same problem from other buyers.I`d keep looking !

The Monaro Register will be able to tell you with about 98% certainty whether tags and a body belong together. You can contact Ben via www.monaro.com.au

It is a dead give away! thats how i picked it out. So the monaro register is the best way to go? This confuses me. I dont get why ID plates are worth so much money then. If they do not come with a body number arnt they useless? How do people re-birth mona

Incorrectly. If you were to stick HK tags on another HK body, Ben has so many recorded he will know, unless you fluke a body with a chassis number within 200 or so of the correct number.

So this car is just a re-shelled GTS then. Is it worth buying? or does this ruin its value. I still am confused to why ID tags are worth so much money on there own

The tags are only rellevent when restoring to original for HK and early HT.

The tags are being purchased by people who may have lost theirs or trying to increase the value of their car, unfortunatly they do not realise that they can be identified as be

Is it worth purchasing this car purely because it has GTS ID tags? The plates being made in the US.. are they exactly the same? or can you pick the difference?

Only buy a car because that is what you want, it is still a HK MOnaro and therefore if after a custom project would not need tags at all. I would be buying it as as if it had no tags.

If you want tags for it then you can contact the people in the uS wh

Is this legal, swapping tags and buying new ones from eBay or USA? Isnt this like rebirthing?

Rebirthing is the practice of changing the car identity for ownership and rgistration purposes, this is why it is illegal to remove a compliance plate from a car, even for painting. As a HK does not have a complance plate the tags are open slather. (does
