350 is stronger but the trimatic is more foregiving, meaning if both boxes were knackered the trimatic will keep you driving where a turbo will stop the car from going pretty much.

Early WB 308 were TH350. Late WB 308 were trimatic. Changeover point is sometime early 1982 from memory (same as VH Commodore).
Blue 253 is a different motor to the red one ie 4 barrel valley and carb hence the designation change to L36.

Hmmm.... I have 2 WB Statesmans. Both are 1984 models and both have Turbo 350 Trans in them..

Not too sure about your 1982 changeover theory..

If they are 1984 they will have originally been trimatics.
What code is on the BODY plate? M38 or M40?
Are you sure they are TH350? Do they have a mechanical kickdown off the carby?

yes.
My feeling wa the the early ones were M38 (T350)
Then to trimatic thru the middle
Back into turbo late????
my 7/1982 is M40 (deville)
My 3/ 1984 is M38 (caprice)

I will have a look thru my sets of tags (over 1000 holdens)
to see whats else i

My old 08/82 Caprice was M40

I totally agree with Byron and have never seen a mid 82 onwards WB with an M38. Adam Id be really interested in seeing a photo of the body tag of your Caprice. Maybe it

Hi Byron,

Yes they are TH350 Trans. I do know the difference... I wrecked both cars and sold the Turbo boxes to some VERY Happy customers to put directly behing Chev engines.

I have not had a chance to check the numbers yet on the body code plate.

I'd be surprised if they were originally TH350's as Holden had stopped using them by then as far as I knew. Stranger things have happened though.

As it should be, as all WB Statesmans after sometime in 1982 had M40 (trimatic boxes).
