are you talking about body and engine numbers etc?
i googled holden body codes or something and found a downloadable program you just type part of the trim, paint, body, etc number in and it will tell you what it is.

There are some books that do explain the numebrs on some models, "she's a beuty" has the FX and FJ done, The monaro stopry/facts has the HK to HZ monaro and there are some numbers in History of the Holden V8.

There is a lot of information available on the web these days. With the huge rise in popularity of older Holdens many forums such as this one have appeared and a quick search of the posts in those forums will reveal a lot of information.
