ive fixed my oil pressure guage thanks to dr terry's valuable advice.
my guage reads at the second highest bar at idle and it moves to the highest bar when the revs are lifted. is it normal for the pressure to rise a little when the engine is revved or is it the caracterists of the guage, or do i have an oil pressure problem? the engine was rebuilt only 1000km's ago and it runs really well.
cheers craig

As your pump runs faster the pressure will increase to the limit of the pumps specified pressure capacity. Thats why lots of start ups for short trips and sitting at idle wear out engines faster than long trips at constant speeds.

My gauge reads very low on idle, so on more than one occasion, I'll be sitting at a red light and notice I have no oil pressure... quick flick on the accelerate to see the gauge flick up a bit... *phew*. :-)

Hi ozjason.

That is because the earlier gauges are 'magnetic' in operation, which read almost instantly.

The later gauges are 'thermal' which are much slower, but more stable.

By the time you get to HJ & LH, all 3 gauges (fuel, temp & oil) are al

uumm, while we are on the subject,
my 308 sle dash, [vb] well its gauge shows virtually no pressure at all. barely registering, even with a bit of a rev,
also, noticed much greater tappit noise of late?
i am wondering, where is the oil pump? is it in

Has engine got any oil in it? Low pressure could mean low or thin oil, especially if you can hear the tappets.
The oil pump is above the filter on the front of the block, take the fan off for access and start skinning knuckles.
Check the oil first.

engines wear out on short runs because they do not warm up properly and cold running leaves fuel on the piston walls which washes the oil off and causes wear. Many old low mileage motors that have been used by little old ladies to go to church on sundays

the tappets run on oil pressure. if the bearings are worn pressure can be low (but not always) and low oil pressure can make the tappets rattle.

hey JP,
when you say bearings are worn, pressure can be low?
do you mean crank bearings?? or other bearings??
the motor has good oil in it, and it is correct amount?
thanx

I mean mains and big ends, also the cam bearings can contribute.they all rely on oil pressure.
doesnt matter how good the oil is or whether you have the right amount or not, as long as there is oil enough to give pressure.
