I have three 253 blocks in my possesion block numbers
QR740884, QR955670, QR554422
Can anyone tell me what vehicles these come out of/what prefix and what pattern they would be?? How do you tell?
Any info would be great

QR955 is HZ. QR554 is on the verge of late HQ, early HJ. QR740 is early HX. All I can tell you is they are not from a Statesman and all will be trimatic/4speed blocks.

Check the date cast marks as well. QR was used in early HZs and then changed to ZR.

My 8/72 HQ SS had QR181642. Date code was E102 (10 May 1972). Believed it was the original but not 100% sure due to the three months between block date and vehicle build date.

I have a 253 with engine no QR 3689xx and a date stamp of E102 as well. That is a lot of numbers in between my block and Monaromad2004s block for the same day of casting??. So would that be about the right age block for my 12 72 SA built series 2 SS or a

I thought the engine nos were sequential for every engine produced, therefore you could have QR0001 then QT0002, QL0003, then another QR0004. It still doesnt explain a jump of 180,000 numbers.

Rule of thumb - HQ engines started at Qx1001 or 11Qx1001 (IIRC 1001 is the start point), and there were about 500,000 HQ's made between release around 6/71 and the end around 9/74. So by interpolation you should be able to work out approx what sequence nu |

Thanks for the info Byron. I checked a eng at work to day and it was cast after my block but numbered lower. Then I remembered it being said (Here I think)that if there was a problem with a block it was laid aside and then fixed at a later date. This woul
