Gday guys imm looking at changing out my supra 5 in my ute to an auto. not sure wether to go with a th400 or 350, how much difference is there between the boxes and what are the pros and cons of each. My 308 is a turbo pattern. i want to put the auto in so i can see what the ute is capeble of down te drags. Cheers

T350 uses less HP weigh less and have a 2 peice housing which people think makes them week, i have had both and never broke either,and you can use the same shifter as a trimatic. The t400 is good but weighs more and uses more HP but is alot stronger, also |

A TH350 behind a 308 will be fine. A TH400 is the best bet for a tow vehicle. TH350 was standard in late HZ and early WB so easy fitment, and will use the same tailshaft as a trimatic or manual (ute, van, wagon or Statesman). For a crossmember just shorte |

Th350 would prob be best bet as the others have said it uses less horse power to run than a 400. With the 400 a pipe going from it to the manifold has to be fitted to alow it to change up from 2nd to third. Easy to fit. Also as Byron said it has electic |

I would go T400 in WB get a T400 stato tailshaft,....($150?) BADWB, You say you already have the crossmember for T400. speedo cable easier to find. No cable kickdown crap. hey fellas, i got a t400 and it has a small tube coming out of drivers side of trans, and runs up to intake manifold, to just in front of dizzy,, is this the dooby lacky, that allows it to change into top?? cheers

T400 for sure , I had a stroked 355 twin Garrets 04s n poped diffs befor a trans in a vh 400 rwk it was a monster and trans never let me down

So if i use the 350 i should be able to use the tailshaft off a trimatic or manual?

You will be able to use the yoke from a manual or trimatic auto yes. The tailshaft may not be the correct length, need to check once your trans is mounted in car.
The TH400 Yoke is twice the size of a crappy little trimatic yoke and about 5 times stron

If you want to go serioud drag racing a Powerglide is the go. But id go for a TH400, even though its overkill behind a 308.

Yes a Powerglide is the go in a light car, a 3 speed box usually will work much better in a heavier HQ-HZ.
Powerglide will also up your costs greatly..

Not that serious about draging enough to go a powerglide. My ute has a supra 5 in at the moment which i was told are ment to be rated to 350hp but blew one up after only 6000km on the road. HP doesn't break gearboxes, it's a combination of torque & vehicle weight, not forgetting driving style, of course.

falling bear. yep that dooby waky thing from the trans to manifold is the thing that makes it change into top gear. I found that out when I only had 2 gears :)
