My fiance and I are restoring the XB coupe we bought recently ourselves. Now being very young, we don't have all the knowledge that most of you do, but we're learning quick.
We have had a few different people tell us different ways to start the body restoration.
Some say sand blast, some say bead blast, some say paint stripper and some say sanding discs! The car has a fair bit of rust in all the usual spots which we are cutting out and plating. It also has 5 different coats of paint (original + 4)!!!! We want to do a good job and intend to keep the car for a very long time, so we want to make sure that we have protected it the best we can.
How should we go about it and does anyone know of any good sandblasters/bead blasters in the Ipswich (QLD) area?

I'd avoid the sand blasting if it was my car. If you don't get all the sand out, the car just starts rusting again 6 months after the new paint has dried. Sand blasting can also warp panels.
Bead blasting would be a good idea for the body and soda

I stripped my Fairlane using paint stripper. The down side to this that it's really messy and the fumes are disgusting (my nostril hairs have only just grown back)! A friend is currently doing a ground up rebuild on a 69 Camaro for a customer and showed

GEEZ,4 layers of paint,forget paint stripper its more trouble than its worth,any sort of blasting is going to be expensive with that much paint to remove,be careful with sanding discs as they can build up enough heat to warp panels(keep it moving,dont hol

Thanks for the advice. We are still undecided on how to go about it as yet. We don't mind the long haul that it's going to take to get it ready as we know it's a long term project. We just want to make sure that we get the most rust out that we possibly c

I think it's great that your as passionate as "HE" is.I'm in the same position as you at the moment, preparing the body of my XA hardtop for paint,I've given myself 2 years to get it done.

You're certainly right about the iceberg idea! We just keep finding mor an more.
We have given ourselves 3 years to do it all, but we'll have to see how the finances go!

Patience is a virture when it comes to bodywork,everthing else is easy compared to getting the body just right,but the rewards are high.
I'm lucky as my car has only been repainted once and the body is in reasonably good condition.This is not the first
