Hey all,
I have found heaps of info regarding the breakup of the vin and it all reads the same, however, I have a couple of examples that don’t make scene and need to clear it up for a potential sale.
First eg is a friend’s 9/77 XX7 HZ Sandman Ute and his vin reads 8M80THH4######Z.
According to this site
http://www.sandmanowners...info-identification.htm
the vin says its a 1978 build but the compliance plate says 77

Second is my 10/78 XX7 Sandman Van with VIN 8M70TJH4#####Z
The compliance plate says 78 but the “J” on the VIN says 1980

Also here is a picture of some plates.......
http://www.monaroparts.com/sandman.htm#HZ
that also have the “J” but from what I can read the compliance reads 79. “This particular example was purchased new by a friend of the author”

Can anyone shed any light on how Holden went about choosing the actual year to put on the vin and the compliance plate.
Thanks, Chris

holden build years...

go from 9th month of the previous year to end of the 8th month of the build year. eg. 1/9/78 to 30/8/79 is a "1979 build year"

eg the first set of tags you are talking about is 9/77 so its a 78 build year. vin seems to be corr

Jason,
Thanks for that. That all makes great sense and explains my friends and my issue, however, the last one on the monaro site is a 10/79 (I think) compliance, making it a build year 80, but still a "J" on the VIN. Should it not be a "K" for 1980?

Its going again. It was just a bandwidth problem that one of the hosting companys customers created, which affected all of us.
