in the '70s and '80s it was a great place to browse and shop

i'm a kiwi, and used to go to repco in takapuna ( auckland's north shore ) most weeks

you could buy most automotive parts over the counter

you would trip over rebuilt short blocks on the floor, all on pallets and plastic wrapped

repco had an engine parts manufacturing division in panmure, auckland, huge place. i think they made pistons and other bits 'n bobs

now it just looks like another feckin' kmart

Repco is still here in chch. but they are more expensive than any other shop ive been to. So only use them if I absolutly have to.
Todays cars last so long that the engines dont need reboring.

In fact they dont even make oversized pistons for them.

A couple of good points there and as for the comment about the die hards that fully rebuild cars that is very true.

You've also got to realise that this is where these shops make their profit margins as well. They put those shiney bits of plastic ****

If you want to buy real parts and not Chinese accessories then Repco are still worth dealing with and I do quite often. They were $100 cheaper than Superchinese auto on a new clutch.

Also when you deal with Repco, Rare Spares, Auto1 or Autopro you

Repco may be a little more expensive but at least when you ask for a part they know what your talking about. From my experiance allot of the other retail outlets are run by throw backs from Mcdonalds.

Oh man,

Wouldnt it be great to see places like Summitracing and Classicindustries open stores up here in Australia, it would make places like Supercheap and Auto1 look like a $2.00 shop.
Alas somehow I dont think it will ever happen.
