Folks,
I have encountered for sale an HQ under dash air conditioner (Smiths) from around 1973.
At the moment, there is just the under dash unit available. A couple of questions before I get too excited.
1) What additional items are required to make it work ? Condensor, Compressor and hoses (and drier?)
2) Are the under dash units worth playing with, or are they a waste of space
3) In the event of flagging the under dash, what is involved in converting from straight heater to heater and integrated air con in an HJ GTS (assuming an integrated air system can be found?)

I have done the heater to integrated A/C in an HJ. you have to totally strip out the dash as you need to change out all the under dash ducting. Make sure you get everything including the vacuum hosing and all wiring. Most wreckers know what you will need. |

Is it possible to post a pic. Unless its a rare custom unit, its probably not worth the effort. New units are much better than the old ones. They are much quieter & more efficient nowadays & theyre not that expensive, new.

I was thinking of dropping the under dash HQ unit into the HJ. It is for sale on Trademe (http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=140253472) , with GM 764 on the front.

the hq unit has different underdash ducting to the hj, as the dash is a different shape. also you need an air con padded dash fascia as it has an extra vent for the air con.I did the hq, you dont need to literally strip the whole dash out but it would mak

From HJ onwards the ducting system under the dash needs to be swaped out from the two large cool air ducts right through, so it can only be done by stripping out the dash as the controls and hoses and cable need to be done. They are a lot different to the |

Also if you go the original fitment be sure to get all the control cables and mark where they go as they are different to stock and cant be bought now.
