Holden Rodeo petrol sounds like a diesel?

My old man has a petrol rodeo 2wd auto that he runs around Brissy in but as of late it sounds like a diesel when running. He swears oil pressure and oil are ok has around 240,000 ks on it no loss of power (yet) any suggestions?
(if ant letters are miss it because the key board is sticky... Bloody kids)

take it to GMH..maybe a sensor has gone bung, and its knocking itself to death.
