G'day all.
I am having problems with starting.
wer werrrr werrrrr rrrrrr rr rr r.
I have a holden 355 stroker with 50,000 volt HEI internal coil dizzy in a HZ prem. Lately, my battery is having trouble turning the motor over, even when fully charged with a charger. I changed battery to a new battery and the same thing occured immediately. It jump starts (jumper leads) easily, even off a 6 or 4 cylinder. The batteries I have used are 640cca but on a tester are sbowing 570cca. The altinator shows that it is charging (needle up really high).
The only thing I have changed on it recently is the starter motor but that was turning it over fine until 4 days ago. Starter has been on for a month and is a used one. All terminals and conections are connected snugly.
Anybody have any ideas.
Dave

sounds like voltage level problem if OK with jump start. take your battery termnals off and check they clean and shiny maybe snug but dirty inside and reducing contact area introducing minor resistnce to the ct

if its not the starter you may have droped a cell in your battery, wont work even if you jump start it. do away with the battery in the car try a diferant one if the engine cranks easy the starter is ok. you may still read 13 volts if the battery has drop |
Havent you learnt anything from that guy that gives sermons at church?...Captain whats his name. |

could be earth connection on the engine or earth cable itself , would explain why it jumps, (you do connect earth from jumping car to your engine, not your batt - right) try putting jumper lead from batt- straight on engine earth. hope this helps

you might have new leads but did you clean the mounting points, also run earth to both engine/battery and engine/chassis. run a thicker wire from the starter switch to the starter.

hey mate, if all else fails it could be you starter is polling out. Have seen it before, where crap builds up in the armeture and the starter requires a helping hand to crank, will get progressively worse. Easy to fix, strip it down and clean out the slot

G'Day Roddo. After speaking to quite a few people I have come to the same conclusion. I'll be stripping it down tomorrow and giving the whole thing a good going over. We'll see how that goes. If all else fails looks like I'm up for a new starter motor :

Problem fixed. I did what Roddo suggested and that fixed the problem. I havn't replaced the bushes as they still had heaps on them. The armature was filthy, so I cleaned the whole thing out, re greased the clutch and gave the copper a light emery rub. A
