With all the recent talk about Sandman's (or is it Sandmen lol) I thought I'd throw this one into the mix and see if you guys can give me some assistance.

I own a 4/76 HX Sandman ute, so it's build plated 3 months before HX was actually released. It's a 202/M20 in Mandarin Red, has around 184,000km on it from new.

From what I can gather it was used by Holden as a promotional vehicle and may be the ute from the HX brochure. It was put into the dealer network in mid 1977.

I'm just starting the resto on it (it needs a fair bit of work), and when it's complete I will most likely sell it. So the tricky bit will be what is it worth? Original everything - I won't put a V8 in it, the new owner can worry about that if they wish.

Over to you guys.

Nick

Nick. This is a landmark Sandman and from memory the original 202 is still in place. I'm almost certain it is the brochure vehicle as shown in your profile picture. It probably won't be worth what a 308 one is worth, but it only takes one buyer. Putting a

yes nice one. Myself, i wouldnt buy it if it didnt have the original 6. if it had a non original eng say 308 it wouldnt interest me. saying that its possibly the first hx, and there is a 99.9% chance it is, I think its more valuable than the later hx V

Interesting discussion.
Personally I see no harm in restoring a car, but not restoring original running gear if it is of low spec (eg 202 Sandman, 186S GTS etc). I'd rather spend similar dollars on building a 308 and put the 202 and M20 away. By putting

If I was keeping it then Id put a 308 in but I have something else I want to do after this so not sure that Id get the value out of a conversion on top of a resto.

Chassis is 14A

Try selling it as is, without resto. I can't remember for sure, but there was a few HX's built at the same time, all recorded with this one. There was a van which is probably the van in the HX Sandman brochure. It's chassis number isn't recorded so there

The sandman was such a great vehicle,I wish they would make them again.Having said that they would probably be out of my price range though, with all the mod cons they would come with.I wish I had kept mine.
Cheers Rob.
