Stock VL heads have the big valves in them, and nitrided seats - best of both worlds.
The ports aren't as big as B-cast heads, but this can actually be an advantage, as the airspeed stays higher.

B-cast heads are the L34 type heads that suit blue & black 308/304 carby motors, and were fitted to Brocks. They have the L34 size valves, and larger ports cast into them.

hi, just bought another 308, popped 1 head off to check condition of bores
the head casting is 7449033, i.e. early 308, but the valves appear the same size as the ones in my "B" set of heads
so have they been worked or did they come out with large v |

Hi tenticles
Yes, 7449033 is the casting number for HT/HG 253/308 heads, but larger valves may have been fitted. This has been a very common modification during the 70s, 80s & 90s.
Just remove a pair of valves & measure the diameter of the valves' h |

a quick measure shows the small inlet is 44 mm and the early heads and "B" heads are about 49mm
but i couldn't pull a valve to get a more accurate dimension

Thats close enough tenticles - the B-cast heads run 2.02 inch inlets, which is 51.3mm, and I dare say not many people could get any closer than 49mm with the valve still in the head.
Id guess the 44mm ones are somewhere around 1.75"
