Fitted central locking to te HJ over the past couple of weeks. As I was putting door cards etc back on, I checked to make sure that mechanisms were all working ok, etc.

One of the doors had a dodgy mechanism, where the outside handle would open the door ok, but inside handle needed to be pulled up hard then hit to make door open. Poked head inside door and figured out mechanism, and problem as well.

As the door shuts, there is a ratchet mechanism engages on the back of the catch. This is released by a metal tag which sits just behind outer door skin, and is activated by similar tag driven by external handle directly, or internal handle via tricky mechnaism.

Over the years, the metal tag which activates ratchet has a little groove worn in it. In the box of bits i had to hand was a couple of the folded metal panel nuts that typically come with speakers for screwing into. Folded it shut, pushed it over metal tag. Door now requires gentle pull on interior handle, opens smoothly.

Lovely, and so simple (compared to pulling out lock and re-engineering.
