How can I tell the difference between a 253 and a 308 is there
anyway of telling from the outside.

i like that image 80737k ,thats funny.every time i see some one going off now ill imagine them as that bloke.externally theres no difference between the 2.like tenticles said big cast numbers on passenger side of the block.after that id be pulling a head

Check engine number..early stuff pre 79 308 will be 11QTxxxxx or QTxxxxx
253 will have QRxxxxxxx,cant remember low comp 253.
