Have a 6cyl hz sedan with three on the tree. It has a 3.55 bajo fine spline diff. What is a good set up that will help with fuel costs with only using holden parts. Maybe a diff change,would like to keep the 3sp man. maybe even a smaller red motor. Would rather holden bits to keep cost down. The car weighs 1350kg.Any advice would be great.Thanks.

I had the same setup as you and was getting 14 litres/100kms out of it, I changed to a 3.08:1 diff centre and changed to electronic ignition and lost a bit of pickup on takeoff, but if prepared for that the old girl got around 12-13litres/100kms so a good |
202 and three on the tree, can't get more Aussie than that!! |

Thankyou peterwmh.these things are within reach for this bush mechanic. Realize cant expect mi8racles with economy but 12-13 liters per 100km is better than what i get at the moment.

Another thing to consider is LPG conversion costs less the rebate compared to fuel cost savings. The rebate is more than half the conversion cost. Another twist - change to a 2.78:1 diff and replace the 3 speed with an M22 aussie 4spd. An M22 will bolt in exactly where the 3 speed is and use the 3 speed bellhousing and clutch setup. You just have to cut the hole in the floor for the shifter and run |

Never fully thought of LPG. The state government in WA also give some money back i believe. Yeah i thought 3.08banjos were thin on the ground and snatched up by guys with rare cars like xu1,s and the like. Its funny Byron Rich, i have a vb wagon with the

Yes banjo 2.78s are around and pretty common, but still difficult. All blue motors had HEI.

Was thinking about your diff. Forget the banjo - too expensive and hard to find. Just find a HQ-HZ 2.78 or 2.60:1 Salisbury out of any V8 Statesman, sedan or wagon. These are cheap as chips ($100 or so). You'll also need a V8 sedan or Monaro tailshaft tha |

put the 3.36 in....that be about 2800rpm at 100km, then when tyres wear out put some bigger rubber on, and lower revs another 100. I wouldnt think you would want to go below 2500rpm at 100km per hour, unless you live in a real flat part of town....

Some good ideas here guys.... couple of questions relating to my HQ. Would the 4 speed floor shift bolt in directly for the 3speed box in my Kingswood as well? I'd assume so? Although both top gear's are 1to1 (correct?) i'd appreciate the ability to shift |

You must have a low diff my one tonner would run at just on 3000 rpm at 100kph,give or take 100 depending on road service, and that was a trimatic. tonners generally have something like like a 4.55 diff or 4.11.

I know that you want to keep it all Holden to keep the costs down but a steel case Celica 5 speed is a cheap and effective conversion if you have the front layshaft bearings upgraded in the box it should live forever behind a 202.

4.44 is about 3700rpm at 100km, 3.55 is 300 at 100km per hour std 14 inch appox.
