From my understanding, 747 is supposed to imply that the vehicle is a Jet

Although I dunno why youd choose a 747....to me that implies the car is an overweight, slow, cruising vehicle. Why not pick something with a performance image?

Prob along the lines of a jet.

Our course could mean it takes 4 engines to make it move, goes thru heaps of avgas, runs on avgas, was made in 1969 (yes they are THAT old), cruises well, safe and dependable. Maybe ask an owner.

Cheers John

Sorry to disagree trubluhq, but the 747 is a mighty machine she is known as the "Queen of the skies", fly in one and feel the grunt on take off.

By the way avgas is petrol, jet aeroplanes run on kerosene called avtur or JetA1.

Frank.

I thought jet engines ran on anything that would vapourise eg thinners, diesel, natural gas etc. Or is that just the jet engines that are land based vehicles eg tanks, power plants etc?

Byron, never heard of an aircraft gas turbine (jet engine) running on anything other than kero.

Gas turbine powered ships and power stations run on kero (jet fuel) due to their powerplants being basically the same design as an aircraft engine.

But theres a whole lot more wannabe jetpilots with 747 on their plates who have no chance of ever getting near an aeroplane - except as a passenger!

Gas fired power stations run on Natural gas and these are just jet engines hooked to an alternator. The US Abrams M1 tank has a jet engine and it is designed to run on whatever fuel they can find - look under mobility here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M1

If you've ever been to melbourne (especially chapel st), or lakemba, parramatta, punchbowl, bankstown, auburn, or brighton you will see many VL turbos with intercoolers bigger than engines hanging out the front of a hacked up calais front bar.

747 is the 748th plate in any given alpha series. The first plate is always 000.
