G'day guys, have another question for the forum, Almost completed the rebuild of my red 186 but am stuck on the rocker arms.. The problem is: On one end of your rocker arm you have your push rods and then hyd lifters yes, then on the other side of the arm you have your valve springs and valve stem, Is there a torque on the rocker arm pivot nut? or is there a clearence between the valve stem and rocker arm? Maybe there just all nipped down?? The engine manual is not the best to work from, it suggests that they be tightned to 30-39 Nm which seems very excessive, don't want to bent the push rods or valve stems.. Are they tightned in and set sequence eg: Both valves open/closed or individual (TDC. They are all single units one for each port (exh/inlet) 2 for each piston. What is the danger of over tighning or having to lose.. I know it's a bit of a ask fellow, but cheers...jimbob

Hi jimbob.

I think the specs of 30-39 Nm are for the later 202 type heads were the posts are fixed. Do not do 186 tappets to this figure.

With the 179/186 type heads, firstly you adjust them like old fashioned solid tappets.

Go to No. 1

I used to adjust mine when the engine was running. I had a rocker cover with the top cut off, which i used to sit on the old gasket and finger tighten down using some of those fancy wing nut posts. At idle you loosed each rocker nut off until it starts cl

Yes, I do it the same way as Byron - with the engine running and an old pair of rocker covers with the tops cut out with an angle grinder. Works every time.

The 6 is more upright so I usually do mine with just taking the rocker cover off. If you are organised and quick enough you don't get that much oil splash.
