Did the HG gts350 come out with rear seat belts as standard? I cant seem to find any reference in the hg parts book.

Rear belts were introduced near the end of the HG. Up till then they were optional. The optional were lap or lap sash, but the standard ones were lap sash.

Warren, where is the upper mounting point for rear lap/sash on HG GTS?. Mine has four captive nuts under the seat for lap belts, but nothing for the sash. I seem to remember my HG Kingswood years ago having captive nuts in the parcel tray for the rear sash?

my 70 hg gts has holes in the parcel shelf where you would expect but no captive nuts. pretty sure they are factory holes and this car has never had rear belts. it might be a case of in those days that lap belts were considered adequate so the earlier gs they may not have bothered with the nuts. just a theory anyway

The early HG Monaros do not have the captive nuts on the parcel shelf, it is only the ones close to the change over and on that have them. Yes all sedans have them.

I HAVE A GENUINE ORIGINAL EXAMPLE OF THE LARGE SQUARE PLATE WITH THE 7/16UNF WELD NUT FOR THE REAR PARCEL SHELF FOR MONAROS WITHOUT THE WELD NUTS IN THE ACTUAL SHELF PANEL. AND RECENTLY HAD THEM REPRODUCED BY A LARGE OLD TIME HOLDEN PARTS MANUFACTURER , SO THEY ARE AS PER ORIGINAL SPEC HAVING THE WELD NUT RESISTENCE WELDED AS PER THE ORIGINAL ONE . Do state laws require rear seat belts be fitted, even if originally from factory the car did not have any?

Laws stae that a car must meet the regulations at the time of manufacture, anything else is a modification and must therefore be either passed or be genuine accessory.
If you did this in Queensland you would require a modification plate. So the answer is no you do not need to fit them.

Hi Warren. There are a few anomalies in this area with NSW laws. I think theyve tried to be all things to all people. Firstly, they made seat belts for the 2 front occupants retrospectively compulsory for all cars back to 1st Jan 1965, whether they had them originally or not. No mention of rear seat belts unless they were ADR standard (early 1971 onwards). Recently theyve added laws which make seat belts compulsory for children under a certain age, irrespective of the car involved. So if you wanted to sit your 2 kids in the back seat of an FC Holden, you had to fit belts for them, but not for the driver or any adult passengers. Dr Terry. |

The interesting thing with this is I drive a Queensland registered 1967 Holden with no seat belts in NSW will they ping me?

Very good question. I would say they couldnt touch you for the lack of front belts, because thats a rego requirement & the car is registered in another state. I think the same goes for P plates, in QLD there is no speed restriction on P platers, but if they drive in NSW they can be booked for doing 110km/h in a 110km/h zone apparently, as NSW P platers are speed limited to 100km/h, still trying to 100% confirm.
Tweed police, who you would think would know being on the boarder had no idea, some siad yes others said no.

Hey Warren Im on my Ls in victoria with no speed or power restrictions and according to N.S.W police Im only allowed to do 70ks top speed even though N.S.W L platers are resticted to 80ks so make sense of that. Be careful fitting seat belts yourself in cars without the factory mounting plate. Some may have to be approved to satisfy the rego authority. Its not just a matter of drilling a hole to bolt up the belt, particularly child restraints.....Jack

Dr Terry [\quote] This is interesting as i have a WA registered HG GTS with NO seat belts in the back = no issues in WA, but as we (2+2) will be driving the car to this years Narionals, therefore passing thru 4 states, one of them being NSW. Ill wait and see what happens in the police state Thanks for the heads up.
