Has the key fallen apart?
There is a chip in the key and if the key falls apart, it can easily be lost.
The symptom is the car will crank over but not start.

Rose, try this, "switch on ignition and leave key in the on position, briefly press on of the buttons on the remote and you will hear the locks open and close, remove the key, now replace the key and it should start ok. AL.

Guys.

The immobiliser in Vectras & Astras etc. is completely different to the Commodore set-up.

The remote which operates the central locking has a small battery but is a totally separate unit & can be removed from the key & left at home if desired.
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

yeh, take it to a mechanic/sparky who has a Carman scan tool that will more than likely tell them the problem in seconds.

Key barrels stick in the "start" position, this leaves the starter engaged as you drive. Burns out the starter and flattens the battery.

Try bridging battery straight to solenoid.
