There are a couple of things that will determine the answer to that.

1 - Cam lift, and valve length
2 - Type of pistons used. Also 3 - Might also want to consider compression ratio with octane rating of fuel been used.

Its all relative - Clearance,

OK, we have some figures to work with - but guessing 40 thou is not the answer. First thing I would do is set the head up in a Head fixture on a flat steel bench. Then set up a DTI (Dial Test Indicator) with a valve in the head and the plunger of the DTI

I have done a dummy assembly with plastersence putty, when I do a few rotations of the crank I have 4mm between the valve and piston, I picked .040 as a safe number not wanting to alter valve to rocker geomertry to far, rockers are YT5032s

the last cam

Providing they havent had heaps off them before .040 is fine providing you know what it will do to your comp. Ive machined .080 off them before and know others have done more, even with .040 off though double check rocker geometry and intake manifold fit
