I travel to a new place everyweek with work and this week was goondiwindi. i pulled up at the shell servo and a guy in his 60s driving a yellow overlander ute pulled up i asked if it was the real deal and he said yep its actually number one the first one built and its been his daily driver since it was 6 years old.
I then got to the customer whos machinery im there to do repairs on and outside the boilermakers shed was an old white ute with GTS wheels front spoiler bucket seats and yellow needle GTS dash, the body was rusty so i asked how much? he said too much it an origanal sandman and the only thing missing was the steering wheel centre. He said look at this and opened up his shed an oridanal HX LE monaro so mint i couldnt believe it it was perfect and untouched he asid he paid $10,000.. right next to the monaro was a very origanal yellow lh slr 5000. lucky basturd
It was a good trip for old holdens. if i knew how to get pics of my fone and upload them on here i could show the overlander.
Havent you learnt anything from that guy that gives sermons at church?...Captain whats his name.

I saw the old fella in Duaringa, he was towing a caravan. He told me he was from Tasmania and traveling around a bit. I don,t recall seeing a tag saying it was the first one, but he did say it was the second one he had owned.

To be the first Overlander it would have to be a Absinth yellow 308 auto 76 model HJ Sandman ute with delete stripe option. By 2/78 V.E.A.M had built 34 Overlanders with 16 of them going to Western Australia.

As a true 4wd the Overlander was pretty much useless for anything more than sand driving, but damn they look good.

Cool finds Bundy, there are still plenty of treasures to be found out west ...

It was yellow with no stripes, dunno if it was a sandman though. All Overlanders were 308/T400.

Pete.

Most Overlander utes and vans were Sandmans. It was the easiest and cheapest way to get a well optioned 308 TH400. The first two were HJs, one ute and one van.

Here are some pics from OFF ROAD magazine early 1978. This is the second test drive OFF ROAD magazine did of the first HJ Sandman Overlander, the first test was done on sand dunes but I cant find my copy of that issue at the moment. I also have the 1978 issue of the Overlander magazine test comparison between a white HX Sandman Overlander Panelvan and the Range Rover.

Price as tested:
HX Overlander van ... $15230
Range Rover ......... $16650

Considering a SWB soft top FJ40 Landcruiser was $6990 and the FJ55 Landcruiser wagon was $9650 the Overlander was a very expensive 4WD in its day. The new 1979 VB Commodore sedan was $6990.

Hello all -
Every so often I hit the internet to sniff about and see if anyone is talking about, or seeking info on the original Holden Overlander 4WD. It is quite amazing what appears on the different forums about these unique Tassie designed vehicles. If I had unlimited time, I would respond to them all to correct all the rubbish I read about the Overlanders but most of the time I just shrug, shake my head and leave the experts to it.

It was my father who designed and built the Overlander (Arthur Hayward) and the first prototype (yellow ute) is still alive and well to this day. It lives in Hobart now but has travelled the mainland a fair bit. Ive never forgiven Dad for selling it !!

There have been numerous attempts for other Overlander fanatics to buy the original ute, but as recent as a few months ago, the current owner refused to sell !!

Both my husband and I worked in the family business (Vehicle Engineering and Modifications and also the Overlander Motor Company. Anyway - for those Overlander owners out there who might be seeking advice or info on parts availability etc. please feel free to contact me. My husband and I manage this side of things now that Dad isnt well enough to cope with enquiries etc.

Cheers
Karen V.

PS: Ive lost count of the number of other 4x4s that our Overlander has salvaged from bog holes so I reckon theyre just as good in the mud as they are on the sand --- but I could be a bit biased !!

Nice to know help is still around. My HZ 1-tonner Overlander has moved on, but I still keep an eye out for them.

What are the chances of you doing a website dedicated to the Overlanders Karen? I remember when I was trying to find info on them the best source seemed to be Australian Muscle Car magazine with the white HZ wagon on the cover. Obviously the reason there is so much wrong info out there has come about cause there isn't enough right info.

Hi playwme
Over the past eighteen months or so, there has been a lot of renewed interest in our Overlanders and yes .. we do intend to crank up a website sometime in the near future. Since Mark Oastler wrote the piece in Australian Muscle Car magazine we've been busy dealing with Overlander Owners and really haven't had a spare moment to sit down and develop a site. We'll get there with it one day .... hopefully !!
Cheers
Karen.
