I have an HZ Tonna 355 Stroker/T400/9"
Went to start it today, but its D E A D. Tried crankin, not a sound, totally dead.
Thought it was the battery, but checked it with a multi-meter & it had a full 12 volts available. Dash and accessories are still alive and functioning (radio lights guages etc). Can you good folk help me trouble shoot the source of my woes please? Some questions (some stupid, but thats because I am, so forgive my ignorance)
1. I have 12 volts at the starter main battery feed. When I have the ignition turned to on, should there be 12 volts at the solenoid terminal? Or does it only receive 12 volts of power when youre trying to crank the motor over? Coz I got nuttin when I try and crank it over.
2. Could it be the inhibitor switch? What's the best way to test that? I pulled the terminal off, tried crankin', but nuttin. I shorted the two wires together, tried crankin', nuttin.
3. My starter is a flash gear reduction jobbie. Its hardly done any work (motors less than 10,000k old). I'd be surprised if it was dead, but all things are possible. What is the best way to test if this is working ok?
Thanks for your help,
Cheers,
Dom

hey tonna, i am not an eggspert,, but i am sure if you run a positive wire to the starter terminal, it should crank? unless the solenoid is cactus?? i wonder whether you could run a wire up to a small tester light, to see if you have power when you turn |

Hold the key to the "start" position and run the "T" bar through the gears. If it starts, more than likely the inhibitor switch. If it doesnt, check the connections on the multi-pin plug just to the pass. side of the brake booster on the firewall.

When you say "full 12v available" is that when its cranking? Did you test the voltage during cranking - dont forget that itll drop under load.
Also check all the earths from the battery an block.
Apart from the above, thats all Ive got!?

Thanks for your help Gents, I discovered the cause of my woes, its the solenoid on the starter. Not happy, because its hardly done any work (less that 10,000 kays travelled on new motor & the starter was bought new when the engine was recoed). A bit of co

Good to see you got going.
Ive found that a lot of these "flash gear reduction jobbie" type starters are no where near as good as the genuine Bosch items.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |

Indeed, I discovered that first hand didnt I?! Its an Australian one, Ashwood? (Ash-something-arother I think). The motors still ok, well see how long it lasts with a new solenoid on it.
