I am going to start shopping for a V8 (308/304) block to rebuild for my HZ but just wanted to know what would be the best motor to start with? Like did any models have 4 bolt mains, roller cams, ect.

As far as I can remember the 304 was only a de-stroked 308 done in the VL series for group A tuoring cars rules and regs. No 4 bolts or roller cams fitted by factory. Have a look at the For sale Rodney posed 21/01/2005 a bit further down the list ther is

There are a few different blocks, but they are basically all interchangeable. Here is a summary:
HT,HG,HQ red - All trimatic bolt pattern, neoprene rear main seal. Engine number refixes 308, QT, 11QT and NT.
HJ-HZ, LH (exc L34), LX, VB red - T

Hi Guys.
Incorrect !!
Byron's rundown was pretty accurate.
Just to clear up a few points, all 5.0 litres from 1986 to 1999 were 304, the last 308s were in early VKs.
Both the VL SS Group A & the VN SS Group A had 4 bolt blocks,

Its nice hear from you guy, I stand corrected. I didnt think holden put that much work into the 5lt as they were going to scrap it for the chev. I thought they gave it a clen up and added fuel injection, so was the 304 a destroke 308 ? I know steve has a

The VN GRP A block also has bigger size lifter bores from what im aware of

Both the VL SS Group A & the VN SS Group A take larger (& different to each other) diameter lifters.

What are the chances of finding a GRP A block, very rare these days, especially the price people would want for a block, VT roller blocks can still be bought brand new, which come cast standard clearance for a 355 crank, and alos long lifter bores for the
