I got a mate looking at buying a 308 hq 4door monaro c/w 9" rear for $5k ..
Its in pieces but all there.. Just missing the original block..

Is it worth the money?

It depends upon what he wants it for. If he wants to do a full resto to sell and make money, not worth it (unless it was originally a 350). If he wants to build a nice street car out of something with intrinsic/residual value yes. Also depends upon condit

Is it worth the money? Dunno without seeing it.

If it floats his boat and he understands that he will spend more time and money than it will be worth when its finished, I would say yep go for it, enjoy the job and then enjoy the drive.

a guy in our club just paid $5k for a HZ GTS complete but needing full resto.
