I recently had the original master cylinder and vacuum servo unit rebuilt on my 72 Holden SS (253). But when I apply the brakes, the car doesnt slow down progressively as it would normally. And when I apply full pressure to the brake pedal, it suddenly nose dives to a halt.
The brake linings (front and rear) are in top condition.
So what's the problem? Any advice/suggestions appreciated! Davo

Hi Davo57. It could have a problem with the reaction disc that sits behind the pushrod in the booster. When that is not fitted or damaged the symptoms are like what you have described in your post. I would also be interested in having a chat with you about your SS. I know you say its the original one off your car , but maybe the brake place gave you a change over ? As if its the correct square top cast iron big nut type the HQ onwards use a deep hole rear piston and the HKTG (oval lid type )uses a shallow hole piston . Unfortunately if a brake place has a few hanging around they can mix and match the pistons and front nuts etc and as the pistons fit between the 2 many places dont check the pistons and fit the wrong rear one . Just a thought as the HKTGused the square top HQ type as a replacement from Holden in the early days but had the shallow rear piston . Maybe just worth checking . Good Luck
