They are a 3 speed US tranny made by GM, started here in the EK and ended with the EH. I reckon theyd be thin on the ground now, I remember them being very sensitive and dont think they had a torque converter. In my EH I glanced a silent cop with the right hand rear and that was the end of the damper plate, so I removed the hydramatic and went on to install a HR 3 on the tree, well, I slotted in a BMC B series 4 speed first off, those straight cut teeth on first gear were a show stopper but thats another story. That is correct, no torque converter in these. They were popular in British made cars in the 60s also. I destroyed one in an old 63 Vauxhall Velox, then replaced it with a Powerglide 2 speed auto - never looked like breaking that gearbox. I think not too many would have survived after this length of time.

In Australia the transmission was just called the Hydramatic. The Roto Hydramatic was cheaper and smoother than the earlier Hydramatic, but slower, softer shifts sacrificed performance for refinement. American owners discovered that it was less durable than the earlier Hydramatic, and was prone to various mechanical problems. The factory caused confusion in describing the 3 speed Hydra-Matic as a 4-S model or a 4 stage transmission, which implied it was a 4 speed. However, "second" gear is actually first gear minus the torque multiplication, which quickly ceases to multiply seconds after the car starts rolling. This change in ratio on the first speed was achieved by activating a valve and filling and unfilling the torus chamber. Very confusing, but you only hear the transmission shift twice, as a three speed will do. http://www.ehlimo.com.au/ |

My EJ/EH supplement manual (the big thick black oone) lists the Hydromatic as a 4 sp. The only time i ever heard a hydromatic drop into true 1st was pulling a caravan uphill from a stationary position.

Just dragged out the old EJ/EH shop manual, glad Ive had a coupla beers. How confusing is the wording. Yes, its a three speed ( D S L) on the steering column selector quadrant, but as Adam said its a four ratio tranny. Three speed with four ratios, looks like a pressure sensitive floating fourth ratio depending on what your right ankle is doing. Err, I think.
