Gday all,
I have just put some VS steel exhaust manifolds on my VR to rectify the all too common cracked cast iron one on the VR. My questions is this, The O2 sensor on the VR has 4 wires going to it, but the one that came from the wreckers in the VS one, has only 1 white wire coming from it, I am just curious as to why this is so? I am not using the one that came from the wreckers, it was just there when I bought the exhaust and I chucked it away, beside my one is only 3 months old. I was also wondering whether it makes a difference, with the VS one being right up near where the 3 manifold pipes come together, whereas the VR one was right down near the Cat. Converter. No problem getting the VR one up there, I bought a stock O2 sensor plug and put an extension in the wires, and it is the same thread and everything, but I was wanted to know if being up so close to the engine, and therefore a lot hotter, would make it fail sooner or anything? Is that the reason the VS had a different sensor? Any advice appreciated, thanks.

i think you will find the vr is one wire and the vs is is four, depening on what month year the vs is?
one is unheated the other is heated, heated warm up quicker to get the ecu reading them quicker, just use what was ever in your car originally.

Hi Russ.

The exhaust manifolds that you are calling VS steel ones, I believe would be the tubular VN/VP style which are fabricated from steel tube. From mid-VP onwards (including VS/VT) all Holden V8s had cast iron exhaust manifolds (except HSV type motors which had extractors).

The reason for the different oxygen sensors is that the early single wire types had to rely on the exhaust gas to heat them up before they become fully functional. The 4-wire type (VR onwards) have an internal heater which takes them up to a more stable operating temperature more quickly. This also means that they can be mounted further down the exhaust tract.

Leave the front one there (unwired) just to plug the hole, so you can fit the tubular manifolds & continue using the rear VR ones which will remain connected, further down the pipe.

Dr Terry.
If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Thanks for the replies guys. Dr. Terry, the reason I thought it was a VS one was because it came from the wreckers with VS Comm written on it in white texta, which means either it was taken off a VS which had earlier been converted over, or the wrecker doesnt know what he is talking about, to be fair to him, I prefer the former explanation, which is more likely . I realise now it was an earlier model one, not a later model one as I thought, oh well, it doesnt matter what it is off, I guess, because it works great. I changed everything from the Cat forward, so the rear sensor hole doesnt exist, I had to use the VN/VP mount hole for the sensor, but it worked fine, all I did was extend the wires about 3ft, and it works a treat. The main reason for changing over was that this type of manifold is supposed to be miles better, as they do not crack like the cast iron ones do, which is what mine did causing it to sound like a steam train! Anyway thanks agaim.
