As far as I can work out HK firewall numbers are a lottery, my car is Brisbane built and according to advice from here the firewall stamp should end in BB but it only has one B. From what Ive read here bodies were shipped from plant to plant so maybe the dropped S is still correct. Calling all Gurus.

The M probably denotes Monaro.

I just dont understand what you mean by "am I looking at a a dud."
Just because some numbers dont match up doesnt mean its a dud. Sheesh.

If it has 2 doors its still a Monaro, unless its one of those 2 door Commodores, then thats different. Dont worry, whos gonna know if the numbers dont match. Still a cool car.

I was talking to Dr Terry about this the other day but ive never seen it on HK-HT. Conversation was about HD/HR. AFAIK top letter was the plant that constructed the body, bottom one is the assembly plant. As said Im not sure if this applies to HK-HT. This is similar to say HJ-HZ vans where body is from say Adelaide and rest is Sydney, however as HK-HT have chassis number in the firewall it has to be put there by the body constructor the lower letter shows where the car was assembled. At least thats how I think it goes...
Of the HK-HG ive seen so far with factory mismatching plates ive only ever seen 1. It was a HG van built late in 1971. It was an Adelaide constructed body and hence had Adelaide BODY and ADR tags (and hence chassis number) but Sydney VIN tag. Unfortunatey this doent help your situation as HGs lost the twin letters, well at least those built this late with an AHG chassis number.

I think that is correct. For a HK it should be a Melbourne BODY tag with the chassis number correct for the BODY number, and a Sydney VIN tag also correct for the timeframe. Im not sure what Melbourne built bodies are doing being assembled in Sydney though. Maybe they stopped for a body plant overhaul or something like that. I have to talk to Dr Terry today and ill ask him what he thinks then.

Quite simple.

The top number is stamped intot he firwall when the body is assembled and the other letter is hand stamped to show what assembly plant the body is sent to.

So in your case the body was built in Melbourne and was given final assembly in Sydney.

The reason some HKs do not have the second letter is the strength of the hand stamping, most get covered by paint very easily.

I talked with the Doc today, and he like me couldnt fathom many reasons why a Melbourne body was assembled in Sydney, unless the Sydney body plant was out of action for some reason.
Itd be a Sydney VIN plate.
