We are transfering the running gear from my old Commodore to a mates VB. While looking for a reco rack, I was asked is it effortless or non-effortless(steering is VN power rack). I asked,"WTF", as I had never heard such regarding a VN power rack. To which I got,"on your steering rack up top,if you have a switch up top of your rack near the hoses, you have effortless and if no switch, you have without effortless". Can someone educate me on what the differences between the two are. Which is better for a fit into an early Commodore. And any other info regarding these racks that I may need to know. Thanks.

The terms effortless & non-effortless in relation to power steering probably refers to whether or not the car has Variatronic power steering. VN Commodores did not have Variatronic available on any version. The first was VQ Statesman & then VP Calais. A VN Commodore power steer rack & K-member will bolt into a VB no worries, just use the VL/VN intermediate shaft.
You cant just fit a Variatronic rack in place of a standard power rack. The tower is taller so you need a different intermediate shaft to suit. Also you need a body control module with the necessary electronic to operate the solenoid (its not a switch) on the rack for the system to work at all.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0 |
