i was talking to my dads mate who owns a tyrepower, and he said if i bought a set of 14x6's i could put my current tyres (which are new) on, despite them being on 14x5's at the moment. did he simply forget the width of my rims or is it possible?

It will depend on the size of the tyre.
If you get a tyre that is designed for a 6" rim (as an example) it will usually fit an inch wider or thinner rim as well. The overall diameter will change a touch but you can swap and change a bit before running into problems.
$61!!!! Well done man!
