Does anyone know why there is an oval shaped cut-out in the boot floor of early Sydney built sedans (and coupes?) Looks like it gives better access to the diff upper control arm bolts, but the cut-out is slightly off centre, to the left. Has me puzzled......

you mean this , looks like a HK-T-G Heater blanking plate? Ive seen a few & always be curious about it also?

Yeah, thats the thing. I recon the HK-T-G blanking plate is the same but havent had one to compare.
Ive only seen them on 1971 Sydney built cars- is that what yours is? It does provide good access to the upper control arm bolts but surely that isnt its use. Or is it??? It dosnt appear to have any other use.

No not my car, but have seen a few sedans have this done & one wagon, spose it was an easy way to do a diff swap? but I have never seen it done to a V8?

My 71 (Syd) Wagon has this plate. Although its a rough cut out hole behind plate indicating to me its not done in the factory. Mmmmm Interesting.

Ill drag it out next time we catch up.

Hi, I think this item is one of the all time HQ mysteries. The hole and cover are not on the very first cars from Sydney but appear sometime into the production run and are on every HQ GTS 350 I have ever looked at. Maybe the hole was an idea from an employee suggestion and was only used at Sydney because of the way they built the cars? Ben Stewart told me that all Sydney GTS 350s he has seen have it and suggested that it must have been started as a result of a difficulty on the body assembly line.

All time mysteries are a good thing. Gives us something to yearn for.
The must have appeared rather early in the production run, as I have body # 886-S and its got one. I wonder when they stopped during regular production, as they were gone by 1973.
Curious that late GTS 350s got it too. Is that coupe and sedan? It looks as if it would interfere with the fuel tank vent pipes on the 73/74 cars.
Yours and Bens theory makes good sense, but why continue it only on GTS 350s and not others? Same diff and mounting.
As is the case with these things, the more examples that surface and are documented help in the quest for the answers. Then we can go and ponder other things.......

You might be onto something there Dave.
But you must ask yourself; "Who stands to gain the most from this burnt and dropped toast?"
You may be surprised to find that the answer lies way beyond the humble bread makers.........
Id be looking at the petrol companies.
Or the banks.
Supermarkets maybe???

I am wrecking a sydney made HQ s/w in my yard , It was first regoed 4/72 (NZ ) 29004-S , 80335QH720992 . and it has the cutout , I have not seen it before . Mark.

Seeing as though the plate is mainly seen on 350,s is it relative to export models, eg South African cars fitted with chevy 12 bolt diffs.

The VIN 8P35UCH773959Q suggests that this car of yours is (or was) a 350 V8 Premier wagon. Is it?

Hi Mark,
Man that is one rare car! There wouldnt be many of those in NZ. Not too many here either.
So the floorpan hole dissapeared prior to 8/73. We are narrowing it down.
The records give the completion date of 9/8/73, and a selling date of 2/74. There is no engine number recorded but it should be around QU1252X +/- 10 or so. It is/was T400 trans and 3.08 diff. The records state it was a standard salisbury unit, but my understanding was that all 350 HQs got a LSD. The records do have their errors though. It also had power steering but no air/con.
I have a feeling Byron knows a bit about these 350 Premier cars?
