I think weve been thru this before, but are your HQ Chevrolet 350 cars actually badged as Statesmans (if not what are they badged ?) & are they sold in addition to or above the normal HQ Statesman DeVille ?

Hi Mark, Man that is one rare car! There wouldnt be many of those in NZ. Not too many here either. So the floorpan hole dissapeared prior to 8/73. We are narrowing it down. The records give the completion date of 9/8/73, and a selling date of 2/74. There is no engine number recorded but it should be around QU1252X +/- 10 or so. It is/was T400 trans and 3.08 diff. The records state it was a standard salisbury unit, but my understanding was that all 350 HQs got a LSD. The records do have their errors though. It also had power steering but no air/con. I have a feeling Byron knows a bit about these 350 Premier cars? Andy.
Yes there were 4 of these made, and all 4 still exist ie have been recorded in recent times. One was ordered new by Bob Jane in Sebring Orange. _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

Just replying to you Terry, my wording of " statesman " is wrong , these cars were badged and sold as Chevolet 350 , ( I have a single page brochure of the car ) There is a very nice one on --www.trademe.co.nz , auction #226664452, do not know where the production numbers come from he refers to ? I wonder when they stopped during regular production, as they were gone by 1973. Curious that late GTS 350s got it too. Is that coupe and sedan? It looks as if it would interfere with the fuel tank vent pipes on the 73/74 cars. Yours and Bens theory makes good sense, but why continue it only on GTS 350s and not others? Same diff and mounting. As is the case with these things, the more examples that surface and are documented help in the quest for the answers. Then we can go and ponder other things.......
All, This "hole in the boot" thing is something I have no real idea about - just a few ideas on. It was not present on HQ #19 from Pagewood but is present on all GTS 350s that I have had the chance of looking in the boot. I have not looked at many 1972 GTS 350s and the only 1973 car I know of I havent seen the boot area so cant comment. Im told it is on all body styles but I only really looked at GTS 350s. No mention is made in the service material I have on this model. This is one area of HQs I intend looking at next year at the 2010 Nationals. All very interesting, Ben Stewart.

Ozbox has a Dandenong build 6/71 HQ GTS350 (auto). Get him to check his out for you too. He also has a 6/71 LS 350, and the back half of a 7/71 export "Statesman" too.

Greg at Classicozwreck. Ozbox is his username. The LS350 is a Pagewood, and I think the 350 export "Statesman" is a Pagewood too.

Hi, I think this item is one of the all time HQ mysteries. The hole and cover are not on the very first cars from Sydney but appear sometime into the production run and are on every HQ GTS 350 I have ever looked at. Maybe the hole was an idea from an employee suggestion and was only used at Sydney because of the way they built the cars? Ben Stewart told me that all Sydney GTS 350s he has seen have it and suggested that it must have been started as a result of a difficulty on the body assembly line.
I must apologise for what I posted earlier as I have realised that I have only seen 1971 Sydney GTS 350s. I remember Ben Stewart saying that the majority of these cars were built prior to Christmas in that year and production tapered off very quickly suggesting that a 1972 and later GTS 350 was a rare beast indeed comparitively speaking. The number of cars with the stripes on them was virtually nil in the scheme of things. Despite all best intentions, the boot hole remains a mystery to me. We know its there so will just have to accept that fact.

Wondering if these would have been used as special racing holdens like the hk bathurst monaros???? maybe for flex or easy inspection or for a drain hole for fuel expansion???? If they were only on syndey built ones and a certain years, does the years they were built coinside with any racing time?????

I asked a HQ expert about this a while ago and he was quite adimant that it was there for access to the fuel sender. When I questioned this he told me he worked at a Holden dealer at the time and was told by a service manager to access the sender through here, so that was that. When I said I would check with my father, an instrument fitter, he got very cross that I did not beleive him and that he was wasting his time talking to me.
Personally, I believe that it has something to do with body production unique to the Sydney plant, (as Ben said) as if it was to service fuel sender this would have come back from field testing and would have been across the board.
But I am not an HQ expert, so maybe it is for access to fuel sender.
Warren
