So I was just wondering, whats the story with red walls? I reckon they look great on the monaros and sandmans etc and even dare i say it the falcon GTs.. But whats the history? Why do people do it and where did it start? Did any cars ever leave the factory with red walls? Or is it just a showy bit of extravagance? Pardon my ignorance....

Hi hainzy.

Redwalls were a factory option beginning with the HK series. I think they were standard for GTS & GTR models up to around 1973. They could have been even been used on the HB (Series I Brabham) Torana in 1967.

Prior to that time, whitewalls were the only coloured tyre wall option.

The Docs correct.
HK Monaros had red band Dunlop Soverign
HT Monaros Then got a later model Dunlop Aquajet red band this stayed until the end and was also available in regular black wall if one prefered.
HQ Monaros also recieved Olympic Reflex red band as well as the Dunlops.
All those old magazines show them on the then new cars.
They had the red rubber cast into them during the manufacturing process, then the black wall was cut back into them.
Original tyres in good condition are worth anywhere up to $2500 a tyre. I have a friend that has no trouble paying $2000+ for mint Aquajets and has about 25 in his shed.
I was looking in the boot of a phase 3 last weekend and it had a new never fitted globe mag with Olympic Reflex including sticker.
In America they have a few other renditions including twin red bands and even gold bands on cars like 66 Corvettes.

well I have a never fitted redband aquajet 13" for an XU1 and a near new redband that came out of the boot of a 74 HQ Statesman if your mates interested

Redwalls are for Daygos.

Simple as that, you want cool - white.

Cant imagine it was anything other than an easthetic thing to begin with.

Maybe well see some road manufacturers imitate their race tyres with colour coded bands on street tyres. Imagne the "street cred" for the rice burner brigade! Haha.

Yes it was aesthetic as was most things, ie rallye panels on the 73 Monaros. And again like red band tyres, houndstooth cloth, rallye panels, GTS rims etc it all came from America. GMH design team looking over at what the Camaros etc had and Red Bands were big in the USA.
The red band tyres were put on the sports models and the white walls were more for the luxury level cars. Have a look at all the old sales brochures and the only non GTS/GTR car that I can remember wearing red bands was a yellow HQ Kingswood with sport wheel option. At first glance you thought it was a Monaro until you noticed there were no vents in the guards.
$2000 + a tyre are you serious....Yes Ive been out bid at $2000 once on Ebay. My mate is still p!ssed at that, a near new ER70 14 Aquajet red band in Tassie. GT owner in WA got it.

Thanks for the replies and the lively discussion. I never realised they were a factory option. Were they an option for the sandmans? You see a lot of them with the redwalls...

He means Rally Stripes (as opposed to Rallye Wheels)

And further, he is alluding to the rally stripes found on the Camaro Z/28 which are the wide type of stripe. However a rally stripe is pretty well anything including what you would see on a HK GTS.

so by rallye panel he means the huge stripes that basically cover the whole panel

Thanks for that bosko, you are correct.
Just had a look at a HQ GTS brochure, the one with Peter Brock and Holden refers to them as Black paint-outs.
Im reasonable sure the Americans refer to them as rally/rallye panels, panels not being the steel panel rather the paint as being a panel like area.
Anyhow this obviously where the guys at Holden got the idea from their American counterparts.
Odd point the yellow HQ with PB has black paint-outs and that is all that is mentioned in the brochure, but I remember looking at a Sunburst Gold 350 GTS in factory paint about 20 years back and the paint-outs were white. Im also sure that if you got a purple/blue etc car they were also white. I think this is like HQ/J Sandmans where it was either black or white for the contrast. Same with GTS but over time so many are convinced that they were only black.
Almost forgot the orange-outs on silver and red.

Just getting the Quey coupe back on the road this week and considering getting these redwall lines put on my existing tyres. also on my HT350
There are companies around that do them. Anyone ever had them done and will they stay on the tyre?

Think that sounds about right.

I have always preferred redlines or dual redlines over any other tyre.

Does anyone know where the best places to buy them in Perth is or even anyone who paints them on existing tyres.

There are usually private businesses that do striping on tyres. There are a few in Sydney that ive heard of over the years. Most come to where the car is and do it on the spot for, oh, couple of hundred? Just look them up in the directory or google.

According to a mate who is getting them on his HZ, the striper told him that they last quite well, but on new tyres will loose colour quicker. But by quicker i think he was talking years, not months?

If you are looking for a more original look places like Antique Tyres in Melbourne sell factory done red bands. The people that apply the red/white band service by groving your tyres are fine for a short term thing. Ive had it done in the past and it seems good for a few months but by the time a year has elapsed it has deteriated to the point of needing it again. This depends on how much use it gets and weathering from the sun/rain etc. Also cleaning or putting silicone on the tyres kills it.

Just a short note, 30 year old tyres dont last too long when fitted and used. They just fall apart.

Not trying to be a smart ass but having owned American cars and friends with them the rally/rallye panel term is quite common. Some of those paint-outs like on the 74 Z28 could not be refered to as stripes. Also the Chrysler guys have Billboards & Strobe Stripes. Probably a few others lurking as well.
As for the inital item what is the correct term: red wall, red band, or red line? They all seem to get used.
