I am putting a statement up for friendly debate. Opinions, facts, any info. I would like it to be a friendly debate without any personal attacks. When talking about old Holden 6 cylinder motors being hotted up, it is often said. "A 179 HP is the quickest motor" Reasons range from. "Just because" to "They rev the hardest" http://www.ehlimo.com.au/ |

LJ XU-1. If 179 was the best the LJ would have had one. My opinion anyway.

The complete combo makes a motor a winner.
There are so few things that are left stock in "hotted up" motors if you ask me its really not much of a debate since the basic layout of the blocks and heads are the same... and all the tolerances from that era were sloppy so the difference from factor in power output was not as consistant as today.
I personally like 12port heads so theres no guessing where my vote lies - but again, whack a yt head on a red block and itll flow better than a 12port anyway....

I recall a guy saying how his 179 HP was the best as it had been bored (186+60 thou) and stroked (using a blue 202 crank) and had a grouse 12 port head. That would make it like a 3.3 blue motor bored to 208 I suppose? http://www.ehlimo.com.au/ |

The 179 might well be Holdens best 6....although th 3.6 V6 might eclipse this...but the 253 V8 was there best ever motor....

YAY, a thread without 3 year olds :-D
I think this debate or comparison is kind of unfair when talking about modified motors because itll always (mostly anyway) come down to the genius at work in the engine shop with what hes chosen to do and the components he chooses to use.... but as for a stock and unmodified motor then ill vouch for the blue 202 (3.3) every time.

If that is the criteria I vote VK EFI followed by 186S.

Blue 253.... a sweet running motor with more potential than the rest....if only Holden had developed a policy of evolution....

If we were talking stock then how could anyone go past the efi 202? The specs say it all! But for a hot motor the efi system is so limited its not funny!

Too true. And then people also realised that the same stuff on a 202 kicked the 186s butt and the argument about 186 vs 202 has ranged ever since! _______________________________________________________ If we all had the same (good) taste, who would buy all the Fords? |

I always felt that the 192 responded better than a 202 to modification especially in an early holden Fj to HR. 202 to me seemed to go better in LC,LJ TORANA than a 192 maybe weight factor? Same as 253,308,350 in a monaro. The motor changes the "feel"or character of the car.
