Hi All,
Its been happening for a few year's now, with car companies re-introducing model name's.Are they trying to re live past glories or just hoping to fool a new generation into thinking these car's are as good as the original's. Holden's monaro, Ford's GT and COBRA,Cooper S even the Vee dub bug,all these car's, to me anyway, are just overpriced poor imitation's.They don't reflect any of the original's character in any way.Why can't the manufacturer's build some new vehicle's that the public want, like they did originally.
During the 60's...70's everyone I knew wanted GT's, or a monaro, cooper S or a charger of the E38 or 49 type. Not today, the young bloke's don't seem to interested in the new car's.A lot of them just drive the ricer's.

Cheer's.
Robbo.

you make a good point and one that has crossed my mind before...

i think that in about 10 years only the cream of GTs Monaros etc will pull any type of good money as the demand will drop significantly...

Todays cars are like todays music, furnishings and clothing.

Nowhere near as good or stylish as it used to be.

The cars were far more interesting then Warren. Not as safe or as easy to drive by todays standards, but more desirable just the same.
Forget the Safari suits though.

Cheers.

Bring back the Cedric. There are a couple of posters on this site that would buy any car by that name. There is a famous story regarding that car name and Wheels magazine. Any one old enough to remember?

Cars are over-built these days. So what happens when they need to spark sales and sell the last of a run? You can only offer "special" models that are just a few cosmetic tweaks from a stocker. Sure they did that "back in the day" but they were at least a bit creative with it. And then they had genuine specials, sold on the success of production car racing of the era.

Nobody relates anything Ford/Holden do to racing anymore.

Its cultural too. Now, probably 2/3 of people who buy a sport Ford/Holden will add wheels, muffler, lower it maybe, subtle bodykit. So who cares when Ford/Holden offer a limited run model with new wheels, stiffer suspension and a new boot lid spoiler?

As for name recycling, Chrysler have nailed it with the 300c, but most people wouldnt even know itd been used before.

I do not understand about cars being more interesting? in design I would agree that a 58 Holden is interesting and a 72 is just plain in comparison. Even the trim inside an HQ, say kingswood, compared to an FC Special, the FC is just streaks ahead in style and elegance. (My brother in law has a low milage FC Special, the headlining is just awsome, the trim is distinctive and intricate, the dash is uncluttered, very little plastic, all the things an HQ is not)

As a car the HQ is far superior, just like all modern cars. HQ is modern to many "Holden enthusiasts". So it is all relative, in the same way some think an HQ has style there are others that would argue a VT has style. They are all right, it is just different "style".

As for the racing, V8 supercars, for which I am not a fan, is huge. With many relating this to Ford v Holden, you and I may not, but we are a minority.

Kingswood was a recyled name and Statesman was brought back in the 90s. Calais was first to be used in the 70s, but then came out in the 80s. I am sure if you go through the archives of GM Calais would also appear on a GM car out there.

Hi, There is a big difference between using a car name that could be considered sacred and one that is not. The Monaro name is a sacred one and it is great that Holden did re-use it on the fabulous new coupe back in 2001. To have called this car anything else would have been a mistake for the company. I see that Cruze is being re-used after such a short time. The original was a cool all-wheel drive mini SUV type car where the new one is a boring boxy sedan. All this will be very confusing when the name pops up in conversation. I can recall the Datsun Bluebird - which one many will ask? Looking at the name Monaro, there is no confusion here as everyone knows the name to be associated with the best looking car Holden ever built, make that the best looking car Australia ever built and it is proudly a Holden.

The original Cruze was anything but cool. The name has always been associated with crap boxy little buzz boxes so re using it for the current model is a perfect fit.
