Ive been rebuilding a red 253 and now its time to buy 2 last products, an intake manifold and a carby. Can others with previous 253 experience suggest a good carby/manifold combination to use for everyday driving and pulling a 580kg teardrop camper.

Get a rejetted quaddie same as the later Commodores and 4 barrel manifold to suit your heads. Holleys are prone to fuel leaks and need constant tuning. Get your dizzy adjusted as well to suit.

I fully agree with JBM. I have a four barrel manifold with a recon quaddie and it works really well.
Previous 390 holley had fuel leaks.

If you get a Quad from a VB or VH 253 the jets will already suit your engine.

There are 4 main types of Holden V8 head and your manifold needs to match. Theres pre pollution with no EGR ports, the HX onwards EGR heads, the blue/black heads that have a different EGR port and finally VN heads with even port spacing.

Most after market V8 manifolds are 4 barrel.

James, this is why HotRodder2 said Later Commodore, the VB 4.2 V8 didnt get a Quadrajet. They were a red motor with a WW Stromberg 2-barrel, same as HX/HZ etc.

The only models which got a 4.2 V8 with a Quaddy were VC, VH & WB.

If at first you don't succeed, just call it Version 1.0

Try not to use a pollution red 308 manifold. Buy an Edelbrock Performer or Kilkenny Castings 25308 manifold. The pollution 308 manifold is pretty crook.

Also manual 2 barrel carb number I’m led to believe it’s 23 3112
