Attempted to change the drivers door window on HQ ute today - well, what a frustrating bloody job. Worse thing Ive tried to do for myself on a car and I've tried a few!

It's an original HQ door, which I'm told has a different set up re: the window cam at the forward end of the door (compared to HJ-Z).

Followed the factory workshop manual description in terms of loosening the bolts locating the window cam then trying to ease the replacement window/channel unit into the cam and down into the door. Anyway, long story as short as I can make it, had a lot of difficulty getting both of the wheels / rollers of the window unit to go into the cam - first one goes in easily enough, but not the second one above. Basically the glass fouling on the door frame stopped me getting the right angle.

So, struggling away with it and not paying enough attention, and I guess after all the handling of the glass, the window itself came out of the channel unit. For the hell of it, finished getting the unit into position and thought about trying to then get the glass back into it but seemed unlikely to work. Hard to press the glass into position - maybe if I had someone holding the channel from below? But then I'm not sure if any 'glue' is also required?

So I'm asking:

- leave the channel unit in place and have another go at getting the window back into it?

- take the unit back out of the door, re-glue (or whatever holds the window in there) the glass and then start again

- am I doing everything wrong here? anyone point me in a better direction.

- who do you think is the best professional to take it to for such a job, i.e. maybe not a mechanic, better with a windscreen / glass place or a panel shop?

On that, if there's anyone in Sydney out there who has experience with this job on an HQ and wants a few bob please let me know.

Any advice appreciated.

You may be able to put the channel back on the glass but be very careful. Put glass on block of wood[upside down] and tap channel back on with rubber mallet, no glue-just the rubber sleive [has to be in right possi-measure other side door if unsure]Sounds like you didnt take short slide channel off inner door frame to fit new glass. Usually pretty easy but you may have to get a panel beater if you have a drama.
