I thought I'd put a few pics up of my HJ Sandman resto. I bought the van in Feb this year. Since then the body and chassis have been sandblasted. The chassis is painted and back together with new bushes everywhere, ball joints and steering etc. I assembled the engine last week and it and the reco gearbox should be in the chassis by Sunday. Its near Canberra and the original colour is Claret Metallic. The motor and box are back in and next is paint underneath then have a bbq and invite a few mates around to drop the body back on....hopefully in about 2 weeks.

The paint is just a semi gloss black which was $60.00 for a 4 ltr. I wanted to try and keep it looking as original as possible.

I used some tall 15 ton jack stands at the back and 2 shorter ones for the front. I removed all the body bolts then jacked the van up and st the stands under the rear beaver panel where the bumperettes bolt on. I then lowered the chassis and repeated te operation at the front. The back wheels were removed and the chassis was dragged out from underneath. And, as the Gregorys workshop manual says....." Installation was the reverse of removal"

A quick update. I fired up the engine last week and it sounds sweet. Ive fitted a new brake m/cyl and had to make some new brakes pipes, tailshaft is in, new starter and altenator and recoed the power steering pump and box. It got a new set of rotors, pads, cliaper seals, new rear drums/linings/cylinders. Im running a bit behind schedule but thats OK.....the detail stuff is taking up most of my time. Any way, this is how it sits at the moment. It doesnt look like much has changed but there has been a steady run of work been done.

The dash facia had the usual treatment in that someone had enlarged the radio hole to fit in a cd player and drilled 6 extra holes around it. I bought a plastic money tray from Office Works and cut out the bits I needed then glued them into the facia and sanded it down. A bit of black add some stickers and there ya go...

It wasnt because Im too tight to buy a repro facia....it was because no one does a HJ HX repro. All the repros are HZ and have the "RTS" badge insert below the left hand facia vent hole. I still cant believe Rares dont make one for HJ HX .....there must be more of them than HZs.....youd think so anyway. Anyway, it was a pretty easy fix and looks OK.....til I get a repro one at least.

The inlet manifold, timing case and altenator brakets were bead blasted and came up like new. I had all the bolts zinced and the water pump and altenator are new. I painted the exhaust manifolds, followed all the instructions on the can and within 5 minutes off running the motor they turned a gold colour.....oh well.

A bit more of an update. The air con ducts etc are in as well as the gauges. Still go a few little jobs to finish off but its getting there. The exhaust system was fitted last week and it sounds sweeeeeet. The exhaust guy had a "2 in 2 out" muffler that they used to fit to vans back in the 70s. He said he was waiting for the right car to come along.....and it did. He made a replica Can-Am system the same as he did when these things were new. Its going to my mates place for the bodywork mid May. Hoooray
