Can Am was just a brand of aftermarket exhaust system. It was one of the more common ones around back in the 70s.

Update...so its been at the beaters for 2 weeks. My mate has file finished the bonett, rh door and lower tailgate so far and I've been doing rust repairs on the cowl. The 1/4's are well under way with the top half of each file finished as well. It should be home again in a few weeks to get ready for paint.

The cowl had rusted through the bottom of the windscreen channel so a new pice was made up and welded in.

Almost finished. Next job is to make the top section.

I had to cut the lock rod holders out of the top tailgate because someone had tried to force it open and damaged that section on both sides. The lock rod "U" barcket had been riveted on as well. I made new sections and welded them in. Next job it to weld the "U" brackets back on.

Also got the rust done on the rear of the roof. There had been a roof spoiler fitted at some stage and I guess the water got in through the bolt holes in the side.

More progress. I had to cut 2 bits of rust out of the sill but found a heap of surface rust in behind it so I went on to cut out some "inspection windows" ..about 9 in total. The inside of the sill was treated for the surface rust and then the windows were replaced. Almost finished the left hand side last night and should have both done in about 2 weeks. It takes so long because I only get to work on it on Tuesday and Thursday nights for 3 hours each night.

I had the rims blasted and have finished cleaning them up with a wire wheel. Just have to prime them and they are ready for paint.

The top tailgate is ready to go back together. The shell and skin were blasted on the inside to get rid of the surface rust. The bottom edge of the skin has been replaced where there were some rust holes and it should be "as one" next week. The inside will be treated with cavity wax when its done.

The rear apron had rust/dents in it as did the inner panel so I cut the outer apron off to repair it. The inner was trimmed about 40 mm from the bottom to remove the rust and I have since replaced it with a new bit.
I should have the outer panel repaired and back on by Friday....if the stars and planets align.

Trimmed, treated and ready to have the new bit welded on

I've since had the inner part of the outer panel sandblasted and am getting it ready to go back on.

The new bit is in and zinc painted.

I need a new outer rear apron so while waiting for that I moved around the corner and am now on the home straight.

I had a nice HJ Sandman van with a 308 and four speed in the late eighties so this thread has really struck a chord with me. You're doing a great job and I look foward to future posts! :)

Thanks 6pak.....

The little filler panel under the headlight had rusted where it is spot welded. I cut the vertical part of the panel off and replaced it, then cut out the rusted section in the front apron.

The hole was filled and a little bit of bog used to tidy it up. The panel will be spot welded back on Tuesday night.

I got the right hand side of the front apron finished. Now to do the other side.

And, as per my mates instructions, I had to tidy up the inside as well....

I added some bracing to the front apron. Both top corners were cracked so I welded in a piece of metal to strenghten them, and did the same on both the front guards.

I also got the rusty bit removed and replaced on the left hand side panel under the headlight. I should have it finished tonight then move on to replacing the rear outer beaver panel....if it turns up on the truck today.

I fitted a Rares rear outer beaver panel. The fit was OK but it didnt have the recess around the winch hole so I cut it out of the old panel and welded it in.
